The First “QMEStar” English Speech Contest Was Successfully Held in QMES

The first “QMEStar” English Speech Contest titled "Where I will be in 2035" was held in QMES in order to lead students to further understand the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party.

The contest was divided into preliminary, rematch and final. In preliminary and rematch, students elaborated their expectations towards future life, changes across the world,and social developmentin 2035. By then, some of them would have become experts in Materials Science and Engineering, international elites, or educators......Candidates elaborated the close relationship between personal development and China’s prosperity.

After a two-months’ audition, 14 candidates were elected to advance in the final. On 10 January, the final of the First “QMEStar” English Speech Contest of QMES was held at D100 Conference Hall, West Teaching Building, Chang'an campus.

During the final, the judging panel which consisted of Matthew Potter, Alan Allman,Faith NightingaleandAgne Kocnevait from QMUL, Vice Deans Fan Xiaoli and Chen Jun from QMES, and Tan Jian and Su Xiaoqing from School of Foreign Studies asked candidates various questions according to their speeches and then gave a mark based on their comprehensive performances.

All the candidates showed confidence and delivered wonderful speeches on their life goals, expectations in the future, etc.

In accordance with "the Belt and Road" Initiative, candidate Xin Yuepeng elaborated the important relationship between personal development and China's prosperity and called for a global view to have a better recognition to the world as well as China as a whole. The Special Prize of the contest was awarded to him.

Candidate Shi Boning elaborated a harmonious society and prosperous China in 2035 with abundant imagination. At that time, he would have taken more responsibilities for the country’s development and construction.

By looking back on childhood, candidate Zhou Zeyu elaborated his dream as an educator to improve China’s soft power with national characteristics and to make great contribution to the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation in 2035.

Their specific, interesting speeches impressed audience and the judge panel a lot. At last, Shi Boning and Zhou Zeyu won the First Prizes.

After two and a half hours' intense competition, Sun Guangmei, Wang Jiaqi, Chen Na won the Second Prize; Liu Xinyi, Zhang Yixin, Jia Yuxiao, Zhao Xin, Li Xiaoyao, Lin Wanran, Li Zhuo’er and Long Yuheng won the Third Prize.

Thanks to volunteers' devotion to the organization of this activity, the contest was successfully held. Students from Class 2 of Polymer Materials and Engineeringmade sufficient preparations under the guidance of School Committee and they finally won the Best Organization Prize.

After the speech, Matthew Potter made concluding remarks by firstly praising the candidates of their good performances and encouraging them to lay a solid foundation of personal development and to make further progress in the future.

Entrusted by Dean Prof. Kong Jie, on behalf of QMES, Chen Jun made a summary on the First “QMEStar” English Speech Contest. He encouraged students to be ambitious and to devote themselves to the Country's development and construction.

The Contest is a platform to help students to further understand the relationship between individual and a nation. The contest not only aroused students' study and teachers' working enthusiasm, enhanced their sense of mission and responsibility, but also consolidated Sino-Foreign joint educational mode with Chinese socialism characteristics.
