Edmund Burke, Vice Principal of Queen Mary University of London Visited Northwestern Polytechnical University

NPU News August, 29th.(Li Yuanting, Lu Sijing) Edmund Burke,Vice Principal of Queen Mary University of London, Vice Chair of JAC of QMUL Engineering School, NPU and his colleagues paid a visit to NPU on the afternoon of August, 26th. Zhang Weihong, Vice President of NPU met guests in the Third Meeting Room of International Conference Center at Youyi Campus. The meeting was hosted by Zhang Fuli, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation.

Firstly, Zhang Weihong extended warm welcome to the visit of the old friends and briefly introduced achievements gained jointly by the two sides in school running and academic research. He pointed out that the cooperation between NPU and QMUL had a long history. The establishment and operation ofQMUL Engineering School, NPUbuilt a solid foundation for the improvement of talents cultivation and academic cooperation, which would offer more good opportunities of learning and studying for students of both sides. Zhang Weihong also hoped to set up a further cooperation in bilateral PhD exchange programmes.

Edmund Burke quite agreed the suggestion proposed by Zhang Weihong and pointed out that NPU is a very important cooperative partner for QMUL. He believed that it was necessary for the two universities to promote talents cultivation, which would bring benefits to the cooperation in teaching and scientific research. At the same time, Edmund Burke introduced the existing joint PhD programmes and offered suggestions to the establishment of scholarships, the form of exchange and the scale of the project.

Later, Wang Haiyan, Vice Dean of Graduate School, introduced NPU’s joint programmes for doctoral students in detail. The two sides exchanged views and reached consensus in promoting high-level talents cultivation and expanding academic and scientific cooperation. Kong Jie, Deanof QMUL Engineering School, NPU, Fan Xiaoli, Vice Dean of QMUL Engineering School, NPU, Professor Gao Feng of School of Materials Science and Engineering, and Gou Xingwang, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation attended the meeting.
