To effectively strengthen safety management, enhance fire safety awareness among staff and students, improve their capacity for self-protection and emergency response, and reinforce campus security, QMES organised a fire safety training session and practical drill for all staff and students on the morning of 9 April. The event was conducted by Hu Tao from the Fire Safety Division of NPU’s Public Security Office.

During the training session, drawing on fire incident data from recent years, the instructor from the Fire Safety Division presented a systematic overview of common fire hazards and key daily prevention measures. Focusing on the campus-specific fire scenarios, he also provided an in-depth analysis of the typical characteristics of campus fires and approaches to identifying potential risks. He further introduced the appropriate use cases and operating procedures of common types of fire extinguishers, as well as emergency response measures to be taken in the event of a fire.

Following the theoretical training, a fire alarm was sounded, and staff and students took part in a practical drill under the instructor’s guidance. Participants quickly assessed the nearest evacuation routes based on their locations. Staying low, covering their noses and mouths, and moving in an orderly manner along the walls, they followed the designated evacuation routes and reached a safe and open area swiftly and efficiently.

In the practical fire-extinguishing session, the instructor demonstrated the step-by-step operation of dry powder and water-based fire extinguishers: lift, pull, aim and squeeze. He also explained key points such as assessing wind direction relative to the fire and selecting an appropriate position from which to extinguish the flames. Staff and students then took turns carrying out hands-on fire-extinguishing practice.

Finally, on behalf of QMES’s leadership, Wu Ajing reminded all staff and students that safety is of paramount importance, and that fire safety knowledge should be internalised and translated into everyday practice. The event, focused on hands-on drills to strengthen prevention, effectively enhanced staff and students’ ability to respond to and manage emergency fire situations and to take appropriate protective actions, laying a solid foundation for creating a safe campus.
