Online Teaching Report of Queen Mary University of London Engineering School ,NPU

During the special period against the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia(NCP), according to the unified arrangements made by the country and Shaanxi Province, NPU has organized teachers and students to make full use of the network platform for online teaching since February 24. They can continue to teach online despite being unable to return to school temporarily..In accordance with the requirement of NPU, QMES decided to conduct online teaching. Since February, QMES has actively planned and cooperated with various departments to do a lot of work in the online teaching preparation including quality assurance of teaching and so on, which improve the effectiveness of online teaching and ensure the quality of education. The measure has been well received after a week.

.Plan the work in advance and carefully arrange the teaching

QMES has strictly implemented the requirements of NPU and attached great importance to online teaching. On February 7, QMES held the meeting and decided to establish an online teaching work leading group and a supervision team. At the same time, it also formulated theScheduling of Undergraduate Teaching Work in the Spring Semester of the 2019-2020.On February 12, the staff of the Teaching Affairs Office contacted every teacher to reschedule the course. On February 16, QMES issued theOnline Teaching Supervision Work Planand on February 18, QMES held a special teaching work meeting to emphasize the importance of online teaching during the epidemic and guide the departments of the college to work together to ensure the quality of teaching.

.Integrate high-quality resources and make full preparations for online teaching

This semester, the undergraduate teaching of the QMES has 27 modules, 41 teachers participate in the teaching, and 11 supervisors supervise the online teaching. In order to better serve the teachers and students, QMES also organized another 7 staff and 9 volunteers for technical support.

During the period against crisis, everyone worked together to overcome the difficulties. According to theUndergraduate Teaching Work Plan, QMES organized teachers to participate in the training from February 5 to 22. It also actively cooperated with various teaching platforms to establish 31 online teaching module groups and arranged technical support volunteers group to serve teachers guiding teachers to improve online teaching skills and levels.

The Office of Teaching Affairs of QMES made full use of management and service functions to contact all teachers and students and arrange a variety of online teaching platforms such as Rain Classroom and ICourse. It also formulated online teaching and supervision schemes, and continued to follow up modules and reminded teachers to upload related materials on the school curriculum platform and QM +.

QMES has convened teachers in London to hold a class preparation meeting and redeploy the original teaching arrangements. Due to the jet lag, many modules have been scheduled at 6 am London time so that teachers need to get up in the morning to prepare for lessons.

Ⅲ.Teaching lessons through online multi-platforms with high quality

All theoretical modules of QMES make full use of the platform of NPU&QMUL, MOOC and other online resources such as XuetangX. Through modernized information tool such as Rain Classroom, Wechat, QQ and DingTalk, and with the help of resources on MOOC and SPOC platforms, the online courses are taught in the form of live, broadcasting and video recording. We have formed a teaching model with “one major method” with the main means of Rain Classroom/MOOC; “two platforms”: on-campus course platform and QM+ upload professional teaching materials platform; “three assistant channels”: WeChat group, QQ group and Conference group.

In order to ensure the quality in both Chinese and English modules, each course group carried out special discussion and formulated online teaching standards for different modules including preparation, teaching, counseling, interaction, supervision, testing, assignment and attendance, etc., to rapidly improve the level of online teaching.

During the first week of this semester, the online teaching operated stably with good teaching effect. The module team in English II prepared lessons in advance a week in London and discussed the design and distribution of online modules. IT technicians of QMUL offered support, training and registered accounts in Enterprise WeChat and Tencent Conference. Allan Allman, Agne Kocnevaite and Luqman Ahmed are teachers of English. Before the class begins, every teacher prepared a demonstration class to test, reviewed the content of the last semester, informed students of the attendance and trained them to use QM+ for online teaching and to finish related tasks. Modules carried out document delivery, student attendance checking and teaching evaluation activities through different platforms such as QM+, enterprise WeChat and email.

Professor Zheng Hongchan is the main lecturer of Advanced Mathematics 2. In the absence of a blackboard, in order to clearly show the formula derivation and resolve process, Pro. Zheng purchased a writing board to share the “online blackboard”. She designed the PPT which had more space for “online blackboard”. The "online blackboard" clearly shows the content and thoroughly demonstrates the whole process. The students react positively to this.

. Study online teaching methods, Summarize and promote experiences

With the development of online teaching level, the mode of it has becomematurer. In the future work, we will make good use of online supervision team and ICTL study platform to fully ensure its stable operation but also develop online teaching methods and studies. We will further get access to know students’ online learning information, precisely analyze, diagnose and evaluate learning quality, combining with feedback from the supervision team and put the “no interrupt in teaching of high quality” principle into effect. QMES plays a positive role in summarizing and promoting good experience of online teaching in time. We find excellent English classes, lecturers and share with other universities together. On the basis of the existing, QMES takes this online teaching as an opportunity to further encourage the development of online teaching, blended teaching and flipped classrooms, and constantly deepen the construction of teaching information and reform of teaching models to comprehensively improve the quality of talent training.
