Professor Xu Bin’s Lecture on “Global Competence” Was Successfully Held

In order to cultivate students’ scientific research literacy of innovation and enhance the academic exchanges between teachers and students, “Global Competence Salon” series report of QMES themed “Surface/interfacial Engineering Driven Sensor and Actuator ” was held in the lecture hall on the second floor of Building A, Chang’an Campus on February 21, 2023. Xu Bin, Professor of Northumbria University was invited to give the lecture. Fan Xiaoli, Dean of QMES, Cheng Yin, Vice Dean of QMES, a number of teachers and nearly 100 undergraduates attended the lecture. The lecture was presided over by Fan Xiaoli.

At the lecture, Professor Xu Bin talked about “Surface/interfacial Engineering Driven Sensor and Actuator” and introduced four works of his team. First, the design of topological optical structure based on strain triggering and achieve ultra-high signal-to-noise ratio sensor devices. Second, propose a universal method for constructing structural composite gels and enhance the mechanical stability of the gel system and successfully use it to highly sensitive wearable sensing. Third, the efficient preparation of high-quality, large-size nanoparticle films through interfacial self-assembly with high commercialisation. Fourth, reveal the interface factors of jet dynamics through the droplet anti-gravity spray experiment and point out that this discovery provides enlightenments for future engineering applications such as microfluidics, energy, robotics, and equipment engineering.

After the lecture, the students interacted with Professor Xu. The teachers and students showed great interest in his research direction and educational background, and raised questions about relevant professional knowledge and academic and career development planning. Professor Xu answered students’ questions patiently and encouraged students to make full use of the advantages of Sino-foreign cooperative education to strengthen the acquisition of basic knowledge as well as the professional knowledge to lay a solid foundation for further study and employment. The lecture ended with warm applause from students.

The lecture not only develops students’ professional knowledge, but also provides students with new scientific research and learning ideas, which is helpful to enhance students’ professional competitiveness and global competence. It also plays a positive role in promoting the improvement of students’ scientific research literacy and scientific research level.
