QMES Held a Salon for Global Competence—Presented by Professor Wang Long

On May 19, 2023, at the invitation of QMES, Professor Wang Long from the School of Materials Science and Engineering conducted a salon with the students of QMES on "The Experience of Studying in Australia".

Prof. Wang received his master's degree from the State Key Laboratory of Solid Lubrication, Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wollongong. From December 2021 to the present, he is a professor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering, NPU. In the past five years, as the first author/corresponding author, he has published more than 20 SCI journal papers in the field of engineering, including 8 papers in the 1st District of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 9 papers in three top journals in the field of tribology (Tribology International, Wear, Tribology Letters), and more than 40 papers in SCI signed journals. He applied for 5 Chinese invention patents and 2 were authorized.

First of all, Professor Wang shared with the students his own experience in applying for studying in Australia and pursuing a doctorate degree. He introduced his unique understanding of visa application, selection of colleges and majors, selection of tutors and other aspects. At the same time, he also showed the students his scientific research and daily life in Australia. Then, he answered the questions raised by the students about the government and school scholarship application based on his own experience, analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of choosing tutors with different nationalities, different research directions and different backgrounds, and shared the ways to overcome the language problems when he was a doctoral student.

Finally, Professor Wang encouraged students to choose a suitable country for further study based on their own abilities and the curriculum arrangement of the school and the university. He urged that all the students persevere in the face of problems and difficulties, always aim high and cultivate a down-to-earth attitude. Professor Wang's sharing and suggestions are of great positive significance for students to have firm faith and clarify the path of international development.
