Colin Bailey, Principal and President of QMUL, was Appointed as an Honorary Professor of NPU

The Honorary Professor Appointment Ceremony was held on the afternoon of October 14. Colin Bailey, President of QMUL in the second conference room of the International Conference Center. President Wang Jinsong, Assistant to the President Yang Yixin, and Wen Wang, Vice Principal of QMUL attended the ceremony.

Zhang Fuli, Deputy Director of Office of Global Engagement, NPU, introduced the leaders and guests present. President Wang Jinsong gave a welcome speech and expressed his gratitude to Prof. Colin Bailey for his wonderful speech at the 80th anniversary celebration of NPU. In particular, the cooperation between the two universities is becoming more and more comprehensive, wide-ranging. It is now a successful model in higher education cooperation between London and Xi'an.

Wang Jinsong pointed out that the appointment of Prof. Colin Bailey as an honorary professor of NPU would make the relationship between the two universities even closer. He hoped that QMUL research teams could carry out extensive and in-depth innovation cooperation with NPU to further promote high-level research output. At the same time, he believed that Prof. Bailey could use his academic influence to help NPU in improving international reputation and influence.

Yang Yixin, Assistant to the President introduced Prof. Colin Bailey's main academic achievements. President Wang Jinsong issued the certificate for Honorary Prof. to Prof. Colin Bailey and wore the NPU badge for him.

Colin Bailey expressed his gratitude and said that he was honored to be a member of NPU. In the future, he would spare no effort to conduct joint research with colleagues from NPU to share research results, break bottleneck, create first-class disciplines, and make efforts for talent training, scientific research, and local economic development.

NPU and QMUL also signed a letter of intent for cooperation in the joint Dual Degree Master Programmes, which laid a solid foundation for the two universities to expand co-taught subjects and deepen the level of running schools. The synchronous linkage mechanism of scientific research would further promote the establishment of long-term, systematic and sustainable cooperative relations between the two universities.

Relevant staff from Human Resources Department, Office of Science and Technology, Graduate School, School of Materials Science and Engineering, QMUL Engineering School of NPU and colleagues from QMUL also attended the ceremony.

Introduction of Professor Colin Bailey:

Prof. Colin Bailey is currently Principal and President of QMUL, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineers, Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers and Member of the Institution of Fire Engineers, who enjoys high reputation in the realm of structural fire engineers. He was appointed as Principal Engineer of Building Research Establishment, Chair of Graphene Lighting PLC, Chair of Graphene Security, Chair of BGT Materials, Head of School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering of University of Manchester and Deputy President, chairman of the UK working group for the accreditation Board and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of University of Manchester.

Prof. Bailey has published 10 practical fire design guides/books including the publication of the ‘Bailey’ fire design method, which has been used in design software and distributed to 500 companies in 20 countries. This formed an impact case study to the REF 2014. He was the lead expert in reviewing the structural fire design on a number of iconic buildings in London, including The Shard, The Pinnacle, Heron Tower and Leadenhall. He has also been an expert on a number of projects, including explaining the collapse of the World Trade Centre Building 7 in 2001, following the terrorist attack.

Professor Bailey has published 134 journal articles, conference papers, design guides and books over his career, with an h-index of 35 in the field of engineering (Google Scholar). His expertise has been called upon when advanced social and disciplinary methods have been required. He is a professor of great prestige.
