General Information
In partnership with Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), NPU has been granted permission by the Chinese Ministry of Education on May 20th, 2016 to establish a new Joint Educational Institution (JEI) called 'Queen Mary University of London Engineering School, NPU'. It is located in NPU’s campuses in Xi’an, China and will provide high-quality transnational bachelor degree programmes (Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Materials Science and Engineering). The partnership, as a part of a wider strategy of internationalization of higher education in China, consists of the highest cultural communication system between the UK and China, and embodies the achievements that both universities have gained in the process of long-term international academic cooperation and communication in the area of Materials Science.
NPU is classed as a key university in China’s 985 and 211 Projects, and is affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It is also a member of the “Excellent Union 9 (E9)” in China. It is a research-oriented, multi-disciplinary university with particular strengths in aeronautical, astronautical and marine engineering. The Materials discipline ranks top 3 among all National Key Disciplines in China. Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), which was established in 1887, is a member of the prestigious Russell Group. As a research-oriented university, QMUL is highly regarded internationally for Science and Engineering, Medicine and Dentistry, Law, Languages and the Arts. QMUL is ranked 9th for research quality among multi-faculty institutions in the UK in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) and is included as 114th in the Times world university rankings in 2014 and 98th in the top 100 universities worldwide by the QS rankings in 2015. Materials discipline of QMUL is one of the most influential and distinct disciplines in the UK and has been rated as 5-star by the British government for many times.
Mission and Perspective
The Queen Mary University of London Engineering School, NPU, based on the acknowledged expertise and experience of the two universities and their complementary research strengths in materials science, is at the service of the Belt and Road Strategy to provide high-quality transnational degree programmes. It draws on the academic expertise of both universities and adopts an international teaching mode with curriculum system, teaching materials, and assessment methods from the UK. The mission of the Queen Mary University of London Engineering School, Northwestern Polytechnical University is to develop qualified and innovative talents who can study and work transnationally with the knowledge of natural science, materials science and engineering, and social science. Students graduate with comprehensive international qualities, high professional competencies, a global horizon, a life-long study ability, and recognition to international rules. Successful students of Materials Science and Engineering, and Polymer Materials Science and Engineering will be awarded a degree from each university, including diploma by NPU, BEng degree by NPU, and BEng degree by QMUL.
Recruitment Framework
The Queen Mary University of London Engineering School, NPU will begin admitting students in September 2017 in about 12 provinces in China. There are two programmes: Materials Science and Engineering (080401H) and Polymer Materials Science and Engineering (080407H), with 120 students for each programme. Students must take the College Entrance Examination (Gaokao) and will be recruited within the National Plan under relevant regulations. Welcome to Queen Mary University of London Engineering School!
