The first meeting of Student-Staff Liaison Committee of Queen Mary University of London Engineering School, NPU was held in March 21st, 2018 in QMES Meeting Room, East Teaching Building A, Chang'an Campus. Chen Jun, Vice Dean and Director of SSLC; Andrew Bushby, Executive Vice Dean and Deputy Director of SSLC attended the meeting. Committee members Shi Xuetao, Zhang Tiebang, Matthew Potter, Gabriel Cavalli, Du Jiannan, Qi Yue, and all student committee members joined the meeting. Chen Jun presided over the meeting.
At the very beginning, Chen Jun highlighted that the aim of setting SSLC was to strengthen communication between students and staff, and to solve problems during studies and in students’ daily life. The main duty was to discuss advice put forward by students. Then Chen Jun expressed his hope to the committee members. As representatives, committee members should take initiative to pay close attention to the learning situation of students and give prompt feedback to the committee so as to help them develop good habit in acquiring knowledge independently.Andrew Bushby emphasized the significance of SSLC with the hope thatthrough this meeting, SSLC members could learn about students' learning status and difficulties that they have encountered in the course of their study. He encouraged all of the committee members to put forward their own suggestions and solve out problems together.
In view of the problems that they have encountered in study and daily life in NPU, the student representatives actively discussed from the aspects of school management, construction of innovative laboratories, design of experimental courses, and teaching model of theoretical class. It was commonly recognized that after the admission in August 2017, both NPU and QMES have put into a lot of investment and efforts for students, especially the high-quality British educational resources. It was hoped that QMES could further optimize the allocation of resources and provide students with a broader platform for their future.
Staff members gave detailed answers and suggestions to questions put forward by students. Matthew Potter and Gabriel Cavalli emphasized that students should use QM Plus as frequently as possible to extend their learning. QM Plus is an important resource for study. Shi Xuetao and Zhang Tiebang suggested students to fit into British educational mode and adjust learning habit, strategy and method in order to be more efficient. Andrew Bushby explained issues related to Summer School, the most concerned question among students. He said that the number of exchange students would be increased year by year. The school hoped that all students could have opportunity to travel to Britain in the following three years. At last, Chen Jun and Andrew Bushby made conclusions. The time for next meeting was also decided.
The setting and running of SSLC provide a long-term mechanism for effective communication between students and staff. Staff of QMES collected many opinions from students through this meeting. Further improvements and efforts need to be made at next stage.
