The Acceptance Speech of Prize-winners:
Yang Jiye: The Winner of Grand Prize for Outstanding Creative Work & First Prize for Outstanding Final Project
I am honored that the project I was in charge of won the Grand Prize in this competition, and my final project design won the first prize. The project "Research on the Wave Absorption Performance of MOFs Transformed Lanthanum Oxide Calcium Titanate Composites" is a provincial innovation and entrepreneurship training program for college students. It was the first time for me as a project leader to participate in the whole process, and be responsible for the overall coordination of all the works and members, from which I gained valuable experience and also experienced the hardship of scientific research. I would like to thank my supervisor Mr. Kong Jie for his patient guidance, and the project team members Ma Yiran and Duan Zhoufu for their serious participation.
During the whole process of final project design, from literature review, experimental design to result analysis and thesis writing, I learned the necessary skills for scientific research, and I also realized that scientific research requires enough patience and persistence. So, when encountering experimental failure, I should analyze the reasons for failure instead of giving up. The results of my project could not have been achieved without the careful guidance of Mr. Wang Teng. Besides, I will apply the experience I learned to my future research work.
Liu Yupeng: The Winner of Grand Prize of Outstanding Scientific Research Competition & Grand Prize of Outstanding Final Project
At the beginning of 2020, due to the epidemic, I and two other team members who were supposed to return to school in mid-February to participate in the U.S. competition were still trapped in our hometown. Thus the inability to exchange information in real-time became a major obstacle, and we felt frustrated at once. It was Sun Zhiyuan, the initiator and organizer of the team, using online meetings and file transfers to realize the in-time communication among team, who led us to move forward and overcome many difficulties. Thereby the team members had a clear division of responsibilities and were united effectively, with Jia Yuxiao in charge of graph production, Sun Zhiyuan in charge of literature review and writing, and I in charge of constructing the mathematical model. The whole process costed about 100 hours over 5 days, and finally we got the excellent result of Falist!
Fan Juncheng: The Winner of First Prize of outstanding final project
For my final project, I utilized the photo-thermal conversion, adhesion, and bone-growth promoting properties of the polydopamine to design a coating that automatically releases antibacterial drugs in response to external stimuli for improving infection resistance and accelerating bone healing in orthopedic implants. During the second half of my college year, a period of heavy research and coursework, I have learned the importance of time planning and maximizing the effective use of time by using methods such as Gantt charts. Looking back on these past few months, although it was tiring, every hardship was rewarded. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. Li Peng and my fellow project members, as well as Prof. Elizabeth Tanner for their support and help!
Wang Jiaqi: The Winner of First Prize of outstanding Final Project
The final project which lasted for several months has come to an end, along with the end of university life. For me, the final project not only required the book knowledge I studied in the past with practice, but also taught me the deeper meaning behind scientific research. When I got this award, my mind recalled my clumsy movements and my hands that gradually lost consciousness in the ice water when I first ground the sample. I remembered seeing the grain and crystal orientation of P91 steel under EBSD for the first time with the help of my senior sister apprentice, and I recalled Mr. Zheng Zebang's encouragement when I faced the temporarily stagnant experiment and the paper that I could not start. All these were finally turned into precious memories in my heart and condensed in this precious award given to me by the college. I believe that in the future, I will continue to work hard and challenge myself in my study career.
Sun Zhiyuan: The Winner of First Prize of Outstanding Creative Award
Supervised by the Associate Professor Shi Xuetao of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, this work investigates the mechanism of standing composite and the role of solvent-free nanofluid in the supercritical microporous foaming process of PLA material, which is characterized by low melt strength, aggregation and collapse of bubble pores during the microporous foaming process. The presence of nanoparticles and SC-PLA in the system can play a synergistic role to effectively enhance the melt strength of PLA system and broaden the microporous foaming window. The framework of the project is "constructing a structural composite network - with toughening means to improve foaming performance and solvent-free nanofluid to increase nucleation sites", showing the characterization results of SEM, TEM and rheological bubble density, and accomplishing the goal of preparing new microporous foam materials. The project has achieved national excellent closing, due to Prof. Shi Xuetao’s careful guidance on the program design, and my senior brother apprentice Wang Long for his help in the experimental process.
Liu Yuxuan:The Winner of First Prize of Outstanding Creative Award
During this year-long creative project, I gained a lot of knowledge and experience. I grew from a student who only learned related knowledge in textbooks to a person with experimental experience, in which I learned new knowledge and more specifically understood the importance of experimental design and the necessity of careful operation. It was also the first time for me to apply the knowledge I learned to practice, which broadened my horizon, enriched my experience, and laid a good foundation for my future study life.
Shi Boning: The Winner of First Prize in Outstanding Scientific Research Competition
I am honored that my project was awarded the Outstanding Research Competition of the institute. On behalf of our project team, I would like to express our gratitude to the leaders and teachers of the college.
First of all, for our SWOT team, this was a kind of affirmation in our study. In addition, it was an incentive and encouragement for us to keep updating our knowledge and expanding our knowledge horizon in cross-field specialization. Moreover, I would like to thank my teammates who worked together with me. We spent many days and nights together and experienced many brainstorming discussions. Because of our hard work, our team has been able to reap the rewards. Last but not least, I would like to thank Prof. Wang Yinghui for her guidance. Her overall control of the whole project was the key to its success.
In the end, our team will not be arrogant and will turn this honor into a driving force to move forward and make further progress!
Hu Xiangpan: The Winner of First Prize of Outstanding Scientific Research Competition
I am very happy to be able to participate in the Outstanding Graduation Display Competition and get the first prize, which is not possible without the recognition of my classmates and their parents. I accomplished this project for about four months, and finally got the desired result. In this project, N-propynyl-9-anthracene-carboxamide was synthesized by a one-pot method using 9-anthracene-carboxylic acid, oxalyl chloride and propargylamine, with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as the catalyst. Then N-propynyl-9-anthracene-carboxamide underwent an internal cyclization reaction catalyzed by gold ions to obtain 9-[(5-methyl-1,3-oxazolyl)-2-yl]anthracene. The new developed experiment has the advantages of simple operation, high yield as well as clear reaction mechanism, which helps undergraduate students understand the synthesis method and properties of amides. In the process of this competition, my supervisor, Mr. Ou Zhize, gave me a lot of help and encouragement, and often worked with me on the experiment until 12:00 at midnight. Mr. Ou's meticulous and forgetful attitude towards scientific research deeply infect me, and I will carry this spirit into my future study and life.
Conclusion
This display reflects the students' profound understanding and innovative spirit of materials and chemistry disciplines, their high mastery of professional knowledge and practical ability, the embodiment of the college's policy on “Double Drives”—teaching and researching, which also is a review of the college's talent training achievements. Graduation does not mean the end, and we wish all the graduates have a promising future.
