On the morning of June 5, 2024, QMES held a training and seminar for class tutors to further clarify their responsibilities and ensure the orderly progress of their work. The event was attended by Fan Xiaoli, Dean of QMES, Dai Fuping, Secretary of the QMES Party Committee, Cheng Yin, Deputy Secretary of the QMES Party Committee, Wang Yongxin, Vice Dean of QMES, Yang Ye, Director of the Teaching Affairs Office, Huang Quanzhang, Director of the Student Affairs Office, Qi Yue, Teaching Supervisor from the UK office, all class tutors, and staff from the Student Affairs Office. The meeting was chaired by Dai Fuping.
Firstly, Dai Fuping expressed heartfelt gratitude to the class tutors for their longstanding support and dedication to student affairs at QMES. He hoped that the tutors would seize this opportunity to share and exchange experiences in student management, working together to elevate the student affairs of QMES to a new level.
Huang Quanzhang provided a detailed explanation of the key aspects of the “QMES Class Tutor Management Regulations”, including the duties and responsibilities of class tutors, their appointment and management, as well as assessment and incentives. This further reinforces the tutors’ accountability and supports the high-quality development of the QMES’s talent cultivation.
Yang Ye discussed the relevant requirements for final examinations, including pre-exam considerations, regulations on misconduct and cheating, and the responsibilities of invigilators. He emphasised the importance of invigilators in maintaining examination integrity and urged all class tutors to guide students in developing a sense of academic integrity. Tutors were advised to encourage students to adhere to examination rules, prepare thoroughly, and avoid any complacency.
Qi Yue provided a detailed overview of the responsibilities of the QMES Examination Committee, including specific rules for reviewing papers, detecting plagiarism, and determining cases of cheating. She also focused on the teaching arrangements for the fourth-year students of the 2021 class and reminded class tutors to guide students in effectively planning their academic careers.
Zhang Xuan, a representative of the class tutors for the 2020 class, shared his experiences regarding students’ progression to further studies. He stressed that academic development planning should be integrated throughout the entire university experience. As class tutors, they should provide phased and diverse personalised guidance to support each student’s growth and success.
Wang Yongxin then stated that teaching management is a crucial aspect of student affairs. He encouraged all class tutors to help new students adapt to various teaching methods upon enrolment and to assist them in planning their academic journey throughout the university. Additionally, he highlighted that class tutors should play an active role in students’ ideological education and academic guidance, helping them to develop a correct outlook on life, values, and the world.
Finally, Fan Xiaoli delivered the closing remarks. She noted that class tutors are pioneers in character development in higher education, guiding and leading students toward healthy growth, and are a crucial support for the QMES’s goal of cultivating international innovative talents. She urged class tutors to leverage their strengths to enhance career planning guidance, promote diverse development goals among students, and achieve “early sowing, early reaping”. She emphasised the need for comprehensive planning and strengthened guidance to ensure effective implementation and outcomes of academic planning education.
The successful convening of this meeting has deepened the class tutors’ understanding of the importance of their roles, clarified the requirements and responsibilities for various tasks, and strengthened their sense of mission. This has laid a solid foundation for the smooth execution of student affairs within QMES.
