In the golden autumn, with the fragrance of osmanthus in the air, the new student registration season has arrived once again. To welcome the new students, QMES took the matter seriously, with meticulous planning and organisation for the 2024 freshman orientation. During this event, school leaders, academic tutors, and over 50 student volunteers dedicated themselves to providing heartfelt service and care, offering the warmth and support of home to the new arrivals.
Organize and hold volunteer orientation training
Before the start of the orientation work, Ge Qu, the 2024 undergraduate student counselor at QMES, led all student volunteers through a series of training sessions. These included training on new student admission qualification review, orientation procedures, and on-site registration processes managed by the Information Management Office. The detailed training helped both staff and students understand the key points and considerations for orientation, ensuring that volunteers are well-prepared to provide high-quality support on orientation day and laying a solid foundation for the smooth execution of the orientation activities.
Warm Reception from Outdoor Volunteers
On the day of orientation, volunteers outside the auxiliary hall of the Ao’xiang Sports Centre guided new students to leave their mark on the signature wall as their first impression of NPU. They were responsible for directing students, assisting with luggage storage, and answering questions from both students and their families. Bathed in the autumn sunshine, their presence became a vibrant and enthusiastic highlight of the welcoming activities.
Seamless Coordination by Indoor Team
Meanwhile, inside the auxiliary hall of the sports centre, volunteers patiently managed the registration process for new students, including facial recognition, issuing student cards, and distributing handbooks. They also provided detailed answers to various questions faced by students entering campus for the first time. Their enthusiasm and attentive service received widespread praise from both students and parents, showcasing the exemplary spirit of the QMES students.
Fan Xiaoli, Dean of QMES, Dai Fuping, Secretary of the QMES Party Committee, Cheng Yin, Deputy Secretary of the QMES Party Committee, and Maria Romero-Gonzalez, Executive Vice-Dean at QMES, visited the orientation event to warmly greet the new students. They presented carefully prepared cultural gifts to encourage students to adapt to university life quickly, make meaningful contributions, and make the most of their youth. Each thoughtful gesture and warm greeting not only reflected QMES’s care for the new students but also conveyed the cohesion and cultural spirit of QMES, ensuring that students felt the warmth from the very beginning.
We believe that the Class of 2024 will uphold the philosophy of “Connecting with the World, Setting Sail for Dreams” as they embark on their academic journey. They are expected to pursue excellence, surpass themselves, and create their own remarkable chapters at NPU. In the near future, QMES will continue to organise a series of orientation events, including welcome meetings and large-scale introductory sessions, to ensure comprehensive student education and management services.
“Volunteer Welcome Diary”
Before the orientation began, I attended a training session organized by QMES. This was not just a learning opportunity but also our first step in providing excellent service to the incoming students. Under the guidance of Ge Qu, the 2024 undergraduate student counselor, I learned how to conduct the orientation work efficiently and attentively, particularly in helping new students adapt to campus life. We were encouraged to be proactive, listen patiently to students’ needs, and offer them our fullest support. This made me realize that as volunteers, we are not only guides but also the first friends new students meet in their university journey. I hope our efforts will make the new students feel the warmth of QMES and help them thrive in their future studies.
— Sun Lan, Undergraduate Student, Class of 2022
As an outdoor volunteer, seeing the new students walk into the campus with a mix of apprehension and anticipation, I felt a heightened sense of responsibility. I welcomed them warmly, explained the layout of the campus, recommended meaningful extracurricular activities, and encouraged them to actively participate and boldly embrace new experiences during their time here. I believe that as long as they take that first step, their university life will offer them endless possibilities. I hope that my service will help them integrate into campus life more quickly and embark on a wonderful academic journey.
— Anbang Wu, Undergraduate Student, Class of 2022
In my role within the indoor team, I am primarily responsible for handling the procedures related to the registration of new students. This is not just a process but the beginning of their university journey. For each new student, I strive to be patient and thorough, providing clear explanations of every detail in the registration process and offering some advice on both academic and personal matters. I emphasize to them that university is a stage for self-growth and academic exploration, and the next four years will be a crucial period for acquiring knowledge and broadening their perspectives. Through my service, I hope that new students can approach these new challenges with a relaxed and positive mindset and continuously progress towards becoming their best selves.
