In order to improve the level of English teaching and internationally cooperative school-running level, and promote the exchange of teaching experience among teachers, QMES organized and held an exchange meeting for full-English trial lectures combining online and offline mode in the West Teaching Building XA307 of Youyi Campus at 14:00 on April 7, 2022.
Nian Shifeng from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Han Xiao and Du Jinglian from the School of Materials Science and Engineering were invited to give full-English trial lectures respectively on “Polymer Characterisation”, “Thermodynamics and Phase Transformations” and “Materials Science and Engineering” . In addition, Associate Professor Tao Yi from Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology of South Australia An De College, Professor Zhang Juan from theSchool of Mechanics, Civil Engineering and Architecture,Associate Professor Liu Jianxi from theSchool of Materials Science and Engineering,Associate Professor Shi Xuetao from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Timothy Kingham from the School of Foreign Studies were invited in this exchange activity as the evaluation experts for this exchange meeting of full-English trial lectures. The meeting was presided over by Professor Zhang Juan.
Nian Shifeng was the first to give a trial lecture on “Polymer Characterization”. He firstly gave a brief introduction to the development history and process of nuclear magnetic resonance. In addition, he also briefly introduced the calculation problems and formulas in nuclear magnetic resonance so that the students have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of it.
Han Xiao gave a trial lecture on “Thermodynamics and Phase Transformations” online. She firstly introduced the theme of the course with examples from daily life. In addition, she introduced the two concepts of thermodynamics and phase transformations and the relationship between them so that students had a clearer understanding of the content and internal relationship of the course. She also used different colors to highlight the conceptual knowledge points in the text so that students can understand and remember them easily.
Finally, Du Jinglian gave a trial lecture on “Materials Science and Engineering”. She also gave a brief review of this course through some key examples and explain the microscopic crystal cell structure of crystalline materials and related calculations. She focused on the body-centered cubic structure and face-centered cubic structure, such as the Miller index and other related knowledge, so that the students had a more intuitive understanding towards the properties and connections of different crystal structures.
After the trial lectures of the three teachers, the judges gave their comments on trial lectures of the three teachers from the perspective of ideological and political elements, classroom organization, courseware design and writing on the blackboard according to the evaluation standards. They also gave guidance to the teachers on the problems existing in their teaching. Some student judges also gave their own opinions and suggestions. The three teachers said they benefited a lot from this trail lecture. The exchange meeting ended successfully in the mutual exchange between teachers and students.
This activity is the threshold for teachers to teach at QMES. Each teacher needs to be tested and approved before teaching in QMES. This meeting not only provides a platform for improving teaching ability and promoting mutual exchange and learning between teachers, but also is an important part of the implementation of the philosophy that building morality and cultivating people, deepening the reform of teaching mode and forming a new talent training model based on improving “learning ability”.
