To assist students in preparing efficiently for their final examinations and enhance their academic performance in the Engineering Chemistry course, the Student Academic Support Team of QMES recently organised a concentrated in-person support session. The event adopted a dual approach combining “review of key concepts” with “one-to-one tutoring”, and for the first time, collaborated with the NPU’s Student Community, Qizhen Community, to provide targeted and personalised academic assistance. The initiative was well received by participants, receiving widespread positive feedback.
On the day of the event, the support team delivered a comprehensive review session focusing on high-frequency examination topics and common pitfalls in the final assessment for Engineering Chemistry. Lead presenter Liu Jiuru, aligning with the course syllabus, provided an in-depth analysis of key challenges. Through demonstration of typical problem-solving approaches, he assisted students in constructing their knowledge framework. To enhance engagement, the team facilitated an open Q&A session following the review. Students actively posed personalised questions and extended discussions on related topics, fostering a vibrant learning atmosphere throughout the session.

In addition to group tutoring sessions, the team innovatively made use of the shared spaces within NPU’s “Qizhen Community”, a dedicated “one-stop” student support hub, and utilised digital equipment to offer one-to-one, in-person academic consultations ahead of the examinations. The support team collected students’ learning needs in advance and allocated time slots based on individual requirements, enabling targeted matching between tutors and students. In the open discussion area of Qizhen Community, students engaged in face-to-face conversations with support members using their review notes, allowing them to address specific academic challenges in a personalised manner.

“This format avoids the superficial nature of group tutorials, allowing students to seek direct guidance on their specific weaknesses. Senior students also shared their unique insights and revision strategies, yielding far greater benefits than anticipated!” remarked Wang, a participant in the one-to-one tutoring sessions. A total of five team members took part in the Q&A sessions, cumulatively assisting over 80 students, with a marked improvement in the efficiency of the support provided.
This initiative marks the first in-depth integration between the QMES Academic Support Team and the “one-stop” student community development programme. The spatial flexibility and welcoming atmosphere of the QMES Community have created novel settings for academic support. Moving forward, QMES will further explore pathways for integrating community resources with academic support services.
From traditional classrooms to “one-stop” communities, the innovative forms of academic support reflect NPU’s profound commitment to addressing students’ individual needs. The successful implementation of this initiative offers fresh insights for realising the “all-round education” philosophy, within spaces that resonate with students’ daily lives, and the warmth and efficiency of knowledge transmission continue to evolve.
