2025 QMES Business Communication and Leadership Program at the University of Sydney Successfully Concluded

During the 2025 winter break, QMUL organised a 12-day study visit to the University of Sydney for its students. The programme was specially designed to include a series of courses and cultural activities aimed at broadening students’ international perspectives through cross-cultural communication. It also sought to enhance its global competencies, supporting the NPU “127” goal and the development of senior leadership talents.

Introduction to the University

The University of Sydney, founded in 1850, is Australia’s first university and a member of the prestigious Group of Eight as one of the top academic institutions in the Southern Hemisphere and a leading research university globally, the University of Sydney enjoys a stellar international reputation. In the 2025 QS World University Rankings, it is placed 18th in the world.

The university comprises 17 faculties, with a student population of over 60,000, including more than 20,000 international students. Known for its outstanding teaching quality and academic reputation, the University of Sydney has consistently been recognised in Australia and has produced eight Nobel laureates throughout its history. Its strong programmes span a wide range of fields, including the arts and humanities, engineering, clinical medicine, plant and animal sciences, agricultural sciences, social sciences, biology, computer science, economics, and business.

Pre-departure Preparation

To ensure the smooth implementation of this winter camp programme, QMES held two pre-departure briefing sessions on December 18, 2024, and January 6, 2025. The training covered a wide range of topics, including preparations before departure, course planning, overseas living guidelines, safety risk prevention, disciplinary requirements, and emergency response plans. Through these sessions, students gained a clearer understanding of the upcoming overseas study trip, while their awareness of safety and sense of responsibility were further strengthened, providing a solid foundation for the successful execution of the programme.

Campus Tour

At the vibrant and eagerly anticipated opening ceremony, to help students settle into their new environment more quickly, each class organised engaging ice-breaking activities. Through a series of relaxed and enjoyable interactive sessions, students quickly bonded, strengthening their mutual understanding and laying a solid foundation for the academic journey ahead.

Following this, teachers guided the students on a tour of the University of Sydney’s campus facilities, providing a comprehensive overview of the various functional areas across the campus. Students visited the spacious and well-lit dining areas, as well as the fully equipped pharmacy and clinic. Additionally, the campus boasts other well-facilitated amenities, offering comprehensive support for students' academic and daily needs.

Through this tour, students gained a thorough understanding of the University of Sydney’s campus facilities. They experienced first-hand the university’s commitment to improving its infrastructure, which not only enhanced their sense of security but also instilled confidence and excitement for the academic journey that lies ahead.

Course Overview

The “Business Communication and Leadership” course at the University of Sydney was delivered by a team of experienced lecturers from the university. The course covered a wide range of cutting-edge topics, including business communication skills, the development of cross-cultural awareness, leadership development, and core workplace competencies. The curriculum comprised modules such as International Business English, Cross-Cultural Business Etiquette, Team Collaboration and Leadership Enhancement, Business Presentations and Report Writing, as well as Digital Workplace Skills.

The course closely integrated theoretical knowledge with practical application through real-world business simulations, group discussions, and case studies, helping students deeply understand and master key skills required in the international business environment. At the same time, the lecturers at the University of Sydney guided students to actively explore the latest trends in the business field, taking into account individual differences, and enhancing their cross-cultural communication abilities and leadership qualities.

Throughout the course, students worked in groups, applying business communication skills and leadership theories to engage in in-depth discussions and hands-on practice centred around simulated business projects. Under the guidance of their instructors, students completed various tasks, including drafting business plans, conducting market research and analysis, and presenting team collaboration projects. As a result of the course, students significantly improved their overall English proficiency, strengthened their teamwork abilities, fostered innovative thinking, and broadened their international perspectives, laying a solid foundation for their future professional development.

Practical Visits

The students visited another world-class institution in Sydney, the University of New South Wales, to explore its academic environment and campus culture. Additionally, the programme included a special collective cultural activity, with students visiting the renowned Taronga Zoo. There, they had the chance to get up close to iconic Australian animals, such as koalas and kangaroos, experiencing the unique natural ecology and wildlife charm. During their free time, the students also took the opportunity to explore the distinct allure of Sydney, a cosmopolitan city. Whether visiting landmark attractions such as the Sydney Opera House, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, The Rocks, Darling Harbour, and the Royal Botanic Garden, or strolling through the city’s streets and laneways, they were immersed in the local customs, the summer spirit of Australia, and the unique blend of multicultural influences. Through these rich cultural experiences, the students not only broadened their international perspectives but also gained a deeper appreciation of Sydney's cultural heritage as a global metropolis.

Group Presentations

In the final stage of the course, students, working in groups, summarised and presented their achievements from the two-week learning experience. Each group shared their insights gained during the learning process and reflected on their experiences of teamwork. The presentations covered key course concepts, practical applications, and personal reflections, showcasing the students’ growth and progress throughout the project. This final presentation not only deepened the students’ understanding of the course content but also enhanced their teamwork and communication skills.

The University of Sydney’s “Business Communication and Leadership Programme” concluded successfully. Through a systematic study of core courses such as International Business English, Public Speaking, and Report Writing, students significantly improved their cross-cultural communication skills. They also enhanced their practical use of English through teamwork and gained a clearer understanding of their personal career development. The institution will continue to expand its overseas exchange and practical platforms, further promoting students’ diversified development and striving to cultivate internationally-minded, multi-disciplinary, and innovative talents.
